Monthly Ayurvedic Wisdom
Simple, practical tips from Dr. Jay Apte to help you live in harmony with nature through the timeless principles of Ayurveda.Last month, I shared why Ayurveda recommends changing our food, clothing, and daily routine with the seasons. A few weeks later, my “Curious George,” Jason, called me again with another question.
“Dr. Apte,” he said, “I followed your tips, and I’ve noticed that the acne I’ve had on my face for many months is clearing up. My skin is literally glowing! I also don’t feel as cranky as I used to. Is it because of the changes I made in my diet and lifestyle over the last two months?”
“You guessed it right, Jason!” I replied. “Following those seasonal tips is helping bring your Pitta dosha—the heat element in the body—back into balance. In Ayurveda, acne is commonly associated with aggravated Pitta. As your Pitta becomes balanced, it is natural to see your skin improving.”
One of the fundamental principles of Ayurveda is:
Balanced doshas are health. Imbalanced doshas are disease.
Our food choices and daily lifestyle not only affect the body—they also influence the mind.
Feeling cranky, irritable, impatient, or angry can be signs of increased Pitta in the mind. Feeling cool, calm, focused, and content are signs of balanced Pitta.
Acne is only one sign of aggravated Pitta. Other conditions may include skin rashes, boils, blisters, pustules, psoriasis, rosacea, nosebleeds, excessive body heat, frequent fevers, excessive sweating, hyperacidity, and other inflammatory conditions. Emotionally, excess Pitta may also contribute to anger, perfectionism, or obsessive tendencies.
If you have been following the seasonal tips I shared over the past two months, you may already be noticing positive changes. Even better, if you begin following these summer guidelines each June, you may prevent many Pitta-related problems before they begin.
That is the true meaning of prevention.
As the saying goes, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” Preventing illness before it develops protects your health, preserves your quality of life, and helps you avoid the physical, emotional, and financial costs of treating more serious conditions later.
Every person is unique, and Ayurveda offers individualized support based on your specific constitution and imbalances. For people experiencing acne, chronic skin conditions, excess body heat, hyperacidity, or other Pitta-related concerns, I may recommend traditional Ayurvedic herbal formulations such as:
- Acne-Free – for mild to severe acne
- Revivin – for chronic skin conditions
- Cooliv – to help balance excess body heat
- Neutrale – for hyperacidity-related concerns
