As the days grow longer and the temperatures rise, many of us naturally begin changing our wardrobes for summer. Out come the cotton clothes, sandals, shorts, and sun hats. According to Ayurveda, however, seasonal wellness goes far beyond what we wear. Ayurveda teaches that we must also adjust our diet, daily habits, and activities to stay balanced during seasonal transitions.

This practice is known as Ritucharya — the Ayurvedic principle of aligning our lifestyle with nature’s rhythms. Summer is associated with increased heat, or Pitta dosha, which can affect digestion, energy, skin, mood, and overall wellbeing if not balanced properly.

Here are a few simple Ayurvedic ways to stay cool, nourished, and energized this summer:

  • Begin meals with a small fresh salad and reduce overly spicy, fried, or salty foods.
  • Choose naturally sweet, juicy fruits that are in season during the summer months, such as peaches, nectarines, plums, melons, and berries. Ayurveda encourages eating seasonally, as nature provides exactly what the body needs during each time of year. These hydrating fruits help cool excess heat and support healthy digestion during the hotter months.
  • Stay hydrated with cooling drinks like coconut water or water infused with mint or cucumber slices.
  • Enjoy cooling activities such as swimming, morning walks, gentle jogging, golf, or a peaceful moonlight walk.
  • Practice calming pranayama techniques like Anulom Vilom, Sheetali, Shitkari, and Bhramari breathing.
  • Wear lightweight cotton clothing in cooling colors such as white, light blue, green, or lavender.
  • Massage the body with coconut oil to soothe and cool the skin and nervous system.

Small seasonal adjustments can make a significant difference in how we feel physically and emotionally during the hotter months. Ayurveda reminds us that when we live in harmony with nature, health and balance naturally follow.
